“Who Are You?”
Finding Joy in your Identity
Philippians 1:1
Who are you? If I was to do a survey of every one in this room I suspect that some of the answers to that question would be, “I’m a Mechanic, I’m a housewife, I’m a mother, I’m a student, I’m an optometrist, I’m a generally happy person, I’m an alcoholic, I’m a Christian, or “I’m just a sinner, saved by grace.” Our identity is entwined with what we do. But we are not what we do. We are who we are.
We always live what we really believe
We may say we believe one thing and not live it, but that is because deep down, we have bought into another belief that is in conflict with and overrides our stated belief.
“I’m just a sinner saved by grace.”
Saved by grace means that Jesus has given me eternal life
“Just a sinner” - sinners do one thing well, they ______
Romans 3:12 – sinners have all turned aside; they are unprofitable
Ephesians 2:2 - Sinners fulfill the lusts of their flesh
I’m a “Saint.” In Christ Jesus!
The term “sinner” applied to the Christians – ___ Times
Christians are called saints ____ times
Why do we call ourselves “sinners,” When God call us “Saints?”
We are called brothers 80 times
Women are called sisters about 10 times
We are called “believers” 5 times
We are called “the way” 7 times
We are called “sons of God” 5 times
We are called “Christians” 3 times
We are called a “New Creation” 2 times
Who I am in Christ?
I am God’s ___________ John 1:12
I have been declared righteous Romans 5:1
I am united with Christ 1 Cor 6:17
I belong to God 1 Cor 6:20
I am a member of Christ’s body 1 Cor 12:27
I have been forgiven of all my sins Colossians 1:14
I am free from all condemnation Romans 8:1-2
I cannot be separated from God’s love Romans 8:35-39
I am a citizen of heaven Philippians 3:20
I have been chosen by God John 15:16
I am God’s temple 1 Cor 3:16
I am God’s workmanship Ephesians 2:10
I can do all things through Christ Phil 4:13
We _________ once darkness Ephesians 5:8
We were once without hope, without God Ephesians 2:12
W were once unrighteous 1 Cor 6:9
We were once slaves to sin Romans 6:17
We were adulterers, homosexuals, alcoholics 1 Cor 6:9-11
Such __________ some of you
You have been washed, sanctified and justified in Jesus
No longer am I to be identified by my sin!
The word saint is Hagios – “holy,” “__________________” for God
You are the temple of the Holy Spirit
If you believe that you are still “just a sinner,” you will live like it
Experience conditions you to accept this. You do sin!
… But God calls us saints! (Even though we fail to live up to it!)
We are saved by faith and we to live by faith. It may not feel true, but we take it by faith. I’ll tell you what I’ve decided to do. I’ve decided to take God at his word – by faith. No longer just a sinner who can’t help but sin, but a saint. Now there is joy. I am a child of God.
