WWJD: Finding Solid Ground
Knowing the principles which guide decision making
Matthew 5:17-20

There are occasions in life when decision making is difficult; when one must seemingly choose between two conflicting moral choices. Today we are going to attempt to find solid ground. We are going to make a valiant effort to uncover solid principles which guide ethical decision making.
The Bible lays out an unmistakable record of right and wrong
An absolute is a moral ______________ or a universal law
It applies to all men
The Ten Commandments are an example - Exodus 20
Since absolutes flow from God, we are obligated to _______ them.
Jesus on absolutes - Matthew 5:17-20
#1 His Word will not pass away – It is absolute
#2 To break the least commandment is serious
#3 keep his commandments & you will receive great reward
Deut 17:8 on Moral Dilemmas
There are matters ____________ to judge
There are degrees of guilt
There are matters of controversy.
1 Unqualified Absolutism
If something is absolute, you should ____________, ever, violate it
When there are moral dilemmas we must obey both commands
You never know when ________ will intervene
Truthfulness does not mean that we have to ____________
We have no guarantee that everything will turn out all right
Daniel 3:16-18 our God is able to deliver us… But if not,
2. Conflicting Absolutism
Sometimes there are moral conflicts we cannot solve
We are guilty no matter which way we go
We must choose the __________ of two evils, and confess our sins
“If I must do the lesser of two evils, than I am obligated to sin”
3. Graded Absolutism
Moral conflicts - we are not __________ for obeying the higher duty
Some moral duties are weightier than others
We should choose the ______________ of two goods.
Exodus 1: the Hebrew midwives
1 Samuel 21 David eats the holy showbread Matthew 12:3-4
Matthew 12:9-12 Jesus was accused of breaking the Sabbath
So which view will guide your thoughts? How will you make your decisions when faced with moral dilemmas? Let me close by sharing one error, and own great shining principle. Here is there Error: Matthew 22:29 “We make mistakes because we do not know the Scriptures nor the power of God.” To overcome this error, study diligently and trust implicitly. And one Guiding principle: 1 Corinthians 10:31 “whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
