Jesus: Rejected by His Own
Luke 4:14-30
Every so often I return to the town where I grew up. But there’s a funny thing that happens when you go back… They still remember how you used to be 30 years ago. Something similar happened to Jesus. Jesus lived a fairly uneventful childhood. He never married. He never did a miracle until he was 30. And from the sound of this passage he never really was into preaching or teaching in his hometown, because they seemed surprised at his newfound ability. In fact Jesus was simply known to them as the son of Joseph and the brother of James, Joses, Simon, and Judas. He took up his adopted father’s trade. Joseph was a carpenter. And so was Jesus. I guess that’s why they were so surprised
Jesus popularity is a surprise 14-15
Nazareth means ‘a watch tower’
It was a small town – in Galilee / not Judea
A clan of the line of David settled here far away from Judah
Nazarene’s may have thought themselves _________ than Galileans
Mark 6:4 the citizens of the town were Jesus ______________
Jesus Worship is a nice surprise 16-19
There must at least be 10 Adult Males to form a synagogue
The synagogue was designed after the __________________
In front is an “ark” holding the Torah scolls
The worshipers always face towrds the temple in Jerusalem
On one side is a continually lit lamp “the Menorah”
On the other side of the room is a desk “table of showbread”
When Jesus stood read the Word; the congregation also stood
But Jesus sat behind the desk to give the message
Jesus Speech is a Surprise 20-22
Sometimes all it takes is one short statement to make an impact
Jesus was telling his family that He was the ______________!
His mission was to preach the good news
His evidence was that he could heal the sick
His purpose was to free the captive
Everyone sat in surprised admiration at his ability
Jesus Message is a Surprise 23-30
Jesus message cut deep
His message: “Others get the goods, but not you“
The incensed crowd rose up and threw Jesus out of the city
The Mount of Precipitation is forty or fifty feet high
“You will have to heal yourself after you get thrown off”
Jesus slipped away through the crowd
Mark 3:21 His own family said, "He is out of His ________."
John 7:5 His brothers did not believe in Him.
This was just the beginning of a backlash of rejection which would eventually infect the entire nation. Popular, yes; yet the undercurrent of rejection was there from the beginning. From the cleansing of the temple, to his acceptance by the despised Samaritans… now even his own relatives are out to get him. He came unto his own, and his own rejected him… and you can bow down before Him in faith, or you can haul him to the top of the precipice of your life and throw him off. The choice is yours. And by the way if you do throw him out, He’ll just slip away and work his miracles with someone else.
