Follow Me: The Call to Radical Discipleship (Matthew 28:18-20)

Part of the The Coming Spiritual Earthquake series, preached for Growing Together Radio

I must warn you, this is not a safe message. It is a radical call for commitment beyond your comfort zone. In order to be a disciple you must make a great sacrifice of your time to the ministry. This is not something you can do in a correspondence course a few hours a month. This is a seriously thought out decision, in which you choose to rub shoulders with the discipler in order to absorb his philosophy, practices and way of life. We are looking for a few good men and a few good women who will make the ministry to Christ their priority in life. Jesus is calling you, “Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men.”
Loosely defined, discipleship is simply ______________ Jesus. Matt 4:19
A Disciple is a follower… a learner
Jesus noted how few real disciples were among ______________. Lk 9:57
Many followers, few disciples. Many believers, few laborers.
#1 The crowds – thousands! Not all of them were his disciples
#2 The believers – not all literally “followed” Jesus around
#3 The 70 disciples. John 6:66 “Do you also want to go away?”
#4 The 12 disciples
The call to discipleship: - go and make disciples
Make disciples – the goal - Matthew 28:18-20
We are commanded to continue the pattern of disciple making
______________ them – the beginning
The first step toward becoming a disciple is baptism.
Teach them to observe – the method
The real work of discipleship is in the ___________________________
Obedience and observance is the mark of the mature disciple
The setting of discipleship: - come and be with Him
It is a calling - Mark 3:13 - 14
Some _________________ followed and Jesus welcomed them
Others were _________ to leave what they were doing and follow
It is relationship requiring time & commitment
Jesus appointed the 12 to _____ with Him
Jesus spent over 3 years teaching his 12 disciples
In Jesus time you had to leave everything behind to travel with Jesus
Today you can remain in your ________ and still be a disciple - 1 Cor 7:18-24.
It results in preaching and restoration
A disciple is someone who is being trained to minister
The cost of discipleship: - forsake all for Christ
The Hyperbole – Luke 14:25 - 33
Hyperbole – fig. of speech - _____________ for the purpose of illustration
EG… a camel through the eye of a needle
Hate your family
When _______________ love for God - every other love should look like hate!
God wants to be first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth…
Carry your cross
In Jesus day, only condemned criminals carried around crosses
The criminal was about to forsake (leave behind) his old life on that cross
A disciple is to consider himself a _____________ man to his old life
To carry your cross means that nothing is as important as Jesus
Anything that stands in the way of the cause of Christ should be ____________
There can be no question that sometimes a literal cross may await the disciple. Perhaps there will be persecution, torture or even death. It happened to them, it is happening today. Even so, we must follow Jesus. This is what we are calling men and women to today. We are looking for a few good men and a few good women who will make the ministry to Christ their priority in life.

Matthew 28:18-20

18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (ESV)
