Bracing Yourself for Rejection (John 1:40-49)

Dennis Kreiss, October 14, 2017
Part of the Overcoming Your Fears - Sharing Your Faith series, preached for Growing Together Radio

That’s not too difficult is it? Inviting someone to church? Or does the thought of extending an invitation bring fear to your heart. If you fear rejection, you are not alone. According to research, most Americans have never been invited to church—never, ever. The goal of this message today is that we would move beyond fear of rejection and begin to extend a simple cordial invitation to our acquaintances.
Only ___% of church goers invite anyone to church in a year
Only ___% ever invite an unchurched person to church
Yet, ___% of the unchurched indicated they would attend if invited
Most unchurched Americans feel safe from our evangelistic reach
Sometimes Our Invitation Is Accepted John 1:40
Andrew went out of his way to find and invite Peter to meet Jesus
____% of all Christians came to Christ through a friend
____%came through evangelistic crusades
____%came through the pastor
God uses everyday people as his most effective means of reaching others
Peter accepted the invitation
How many people have you invited to come and meet Jesus?
How important are people to you?
Satan’s great lie - people are not interested in spiritual things
Sometimes Our Invitation Is Spurned John 1:43
Nathaniel scorned Philip’s ideas
____ “born agains” don’t attend church more than twice a year
1 out of ___ of the unchurched identify themselves as Christian
Christians are less and less committed to the kingdom of God
Nathaniel needed a relationship with the Savior.
Even Christian cynics need to be invited to Church
Philips vital faith made the difference for Nathaniel
If you want to know, you have to come and see for yourself.
Sometimes those who initially reject the message change their minds and become some of the most devoted followers of Christ. So don’t give up Try it again. Invite your acquaintances to church. And when they get here, we want to invite them to come to know Jesus, the most important relationship in the universe.
The Faith Factor Prayer
Lord thank you for the gift of a life free of fear. Help me to stir my faith into flame. Take my weakness and insecurity and replace it with your power. Transform the little that I have to give into a love that touches others. Replace my anxieties with a sound mind. I want to live a life of extraordinary power so that it can be seen that I am not ashamed of you Lord. More than anything else I want to live a life of unparalleled purpose and so fulfill the calling you have in mind for me. I am willing to step out and begin the process of building relationships for the Kingdom of God.

John 1:40-49

40 One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “So you are Simon the son of John? You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter).

43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” 46 Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” 48 Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” (ESV)
