Examining Civil Disobedience ()

Dennis Kreiss, July 4, 2020
Part of the Faith VS Fear series, preached for Growing Together Radio

In the midst of the Covid 19 crisis, the church has been faced with a crisis of its own. Never in our lifetime have we faced the ordered shut down of the church. Should Christians disobey unjust laws?
The Basis of Civil Disobedience
“Christians should never engage in Civil Disobedience.”
If you obey evil laws you are devoid of values. (Exodus 1:20)
“Christians should disobey any time man’s law transgresses God’s law!”
Jesus “Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s.” (Matt 22:21)
Peter “Obey every ordinance of man.” (1 Peter 2:13)
Paul “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities.” (Rom 13:1)
“Only laws which compel us to violate our faith may be disobeyed.”
If the Government commands us to do evil, we must disobey.
If they take away our freedom of worship we must disobey.
Subject: it means we willingly follow the laws of the land.
Resist Means to actively stand against someone. (Do not resist)
The Path of Civil Disobedience
We should customarily first exhaust every other possible recourse.
Paul appealed to Caesar himself as a last resort. (Acts 25:11
It is only after we have exhausted every other recourse that we should consider Civil Disobedience. If it is at all possible to avoid disobedience, we must. Whatever we do, we should do it to please our Lord Jesus Christ.
