Civil Disobedience - Part 2 ()

Dennis Kreiss, July 11, 2020
Part of the Faith VS Fear series, preached for Growing Together Radio

There is a very real battle over the headship of Christ. Just what is the Headship of Christ? It can be condensed to this revolutionary thought: “Christ is the head over all things in the church.” (Ephesians 1:22). This must be the fundamental guiding principle of every genuine New Testament Church. Anything less is the usurpation of the authority of Jesus Christ. Christ is in charge of the church, and no one else. We are to be subject to Jesus Christ in all things.
The Principle of Dual Citizenship
Who is in charge of the church?
“Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man.” 1 Peter 2:13-14
“Our citizenship is in heaven.” Philippians 3:20
As citizens of the earth, we are to submit to every ordinance of man.
As a citizen of heaven, we are to obey every command of Jesus.
Often those two kingdoms are in conflict.
“Who is in charge of this universe?”
Throughout history, many would rather die than disobey God.
we may engage in civil disobedience under two conditions:
#1 if the government demands we do evil
#2 If the government prohibits us from obeying Christ
Sometimes we may disobey immediately
Sometimes we should work through the court system to a resolution.
The Principle of Thoughtfulness
#1. Are the Edicts prudent?
“The prudent sees danger and hides himself.” Proverbs 27:12
At times it is prudent to cancel church services.
#2 Are the edicts reasonable?
Sometimes we even obey unreasonable laws! (Matthew 5:41)
Can we reposition ourselves and thus still fulfill our God given responsibilities?
Sometimes we just have to be creative and think outside the box.
#3 Are the edicts equitable?
“My brothers, show no partiality.” James 2:1
Equal protection under the law is enshrined in our constitution.
People are struggling with these rules because some inequitable.
Come what may, Christ is the head of the church, and the day may come when the kingdoms of heaven and earth will collide, and we in the church may be at odds with the laws of men. What are you going to do when that day comes? Who are you going to follow? Where does your allegiance lie? Are you willing to be a Christ follower in the good times and the bad? Are you willing to lay your life down for Jesus?
