Overcoming the Fear of Poverty ()

Dennis Kreiss, May 2, 2020
Part of the Faith VS Fear series, preached for Growing Together Radio

There is a psychological term for the fear of poverty: Aporophobia. It is the fear of losing it all and living in destitution. The discussion is not a matter “if” there are hard times coming, the question how will you face them? In faith or fear. Choosing to live by faith today is harder than letting fear control you; but tomorrow, you’ll regret choosing fear, and you will never regret choosing faith.
“Where does your provision come from?”
My God shall supply all your need by Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19
Seek first the kingdom …and all these things shall be added to you. Matthew 6:31
You must forge an identity of dependence on God.
Four Statements of Personal Strength
1. You may only have a little, but God will make sure that it will be the best! 16
A little that a righteous man has Is better than the riches of many wicked.
I may only have a little, but for that I am grateful.
2. You may be weak, but God will strengthen you. 17
The Lord upholds the righteous.
When I am weak, then I am strong. 2 Corinthians 12:9-12
3. You may face lean times, but you will always have enough
In the days of famine they shall be satisfied.
You may not have as much as you want, but that you will have what you need!
Philippians 4:11-13 I have learned to be content:
4. You may not have a lot, but you’ll always have enough to share
The righteous shows mercy and gives.
Three promises of God’s provision
1. God promises that he will guide your steps
The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord.
Since God is guiding me, I will live courageously.
2. God promises that when you fall on bad times, he’ll help you
Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down.
Since God is my helper, I will live hopefully!
3. God promises that in lean times, he will never forsake you
I have never seen the righteous forsaken.
“I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Since Jesus will never leave me, I can expect miracles!
Here's most important economic truth of hard times: You must forge an identity dependent on God so that Your heart can say, “my provision comes from God. I am trusting him, to take care of me.” That is why you should not fear poverty.
